Incredible India Cultural Connections

Indian, Spanish, Sri Lankan, Thai and African dances are connected through similar rhythmic cadences and movements.

Saluting the extraordinary Miller Outdoor Theatre, Samskriti, in collaboration with the Consulate General of India in Houston, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Govt. of India, and Battery Dance Company, New York, proudly presents, for the 15th year, INCREDIBLE INDIA: CULTURAL CONNECTIONS, curated by Artistic Director Rathna Kumar and featuring KATHAK!  with nine of India’s leading dancers and musicians in the cherished North Indian dance form that combines dazzling virtuosity with the subtlety of spirituality and story-telling.

Sharing the stage with the ensemble from India are Egyptian dancer Sal Maktoub and Flamenco dancer Ana Maria Barcelo, showing the audience that India, Egypt and Spain share many similarities in their dances. The rapid ‘turns’ of the body in Kathak match Sal’s pirouettes which are akin to the circling movements of the Whirling Dervishes, and Ana Maria’s foot stomping is very similar to the ‘pyrotechnics’ of Kathak footwork. Through this program Samskriti once again lives up to its mission of being a powerful cultural conduit between the East and the West.

This is a ticketed event for the covered seating area. Free tickets are available (4 per person over age 16 while they last) at the Miller Outdoor Theatre box office the day of the performance between the hours of 10:30 AM-1:00 PM. If tickets remain at 1:00 PM, the box office will re-open one hour before show time to distribute the remaining tickets. As always, open seating on the hill. The shows goes on rain or shine.
