Dance India! A Universal Language

Odissi and Silambam bring a mixture of traditional and contemporary Indian culture!

ACT I: ODISSI

Odissi, an Indian Classical Dance, hails from Odisha in eastern India, dating back to 1000 years ago. It embodies regional craft, culture, lifestyle and civilization of Odisha. The dance stands out for its beautiful distinct costume and the typical signature posture of "Tribhangi" highlighting the three distinct folds of human body. The fluid movements are brought out by intricate dance steps, elaborate mudras (hand gestures) and combined with emotive gestures called Abhinaya, it captivates any audience, breaking language barriers.  Odissi Academy, a Houston based organization, serves as a conduit from eastern India, inviting teaching and performing talents from Odisha, also serves as a platform for local performers in Houston. Odissi Academy joins hands with Miller Outdoor Auditorium in providing an incredible artistic showpiece for performing art lovers and Houstonians at large. Feast your senses with this event extraordinaire!

ACT II: SILAMBAM

‘Kāvya - Poetry in Motion’ aims to convey, through the blending of music, dance, and poetry, that across divisions of culture, language and time, basic sentiments remain unchanged and unite the human race at its very core. New beginnings – the dawning of a new day, the beginning of life in the womb, new springtime blooms, or the first sweet pangs of new love; the human urge to explore and wander; the bittersweet nature of memories; the age-old but timeless chant for woman empowerment; the despair and angst of farewells; and the need for inclusion and tolerance are among the themes explored in the production. Poetry ranging from 13th century Sufi work and 17th century Japanese Haiku, to 19th to 21st century Gaelic, Estonian, Dutch, Spanish and English literature is woven together and set to music that spans a range of classical and contemporary genres, and interpreted through Indian classical and Western contemporary dance.

Conceptualized, directed, and choreographed by Dr. Lavanya Rajagopalan; featuring choreography by Kalpana Subbarao, Supradipta Datta, and Keith Cross. Presented by dancers of the Silambam Houston Dance Company, with guest performers Supradipta Datta, Preethi Ramaprasad, and dancers from Kalaangan and Dancescape by Joyce. Music by Mahalakshmi Krishnan, Sandeep Kumrouth, and Revathi Sellappan.
