With energetic dance, thundering drums, and culturally unique costumes this will be night that will show the audience why Okinawa is known as an “Island of performing arts!”

Okinawa is the home to a powerful, energetic, and lively version of Taiko drumming called “Eisa.” Eisa is a distinctly Okinawan ceremonial dance which has a history that dates back many centuries. It was originally performed to welcome and console the souls of one’s ancestors during the summer.

The dance involves the use of various drums used to create the thundering rhythm and choreographed dances heavily influenced by Okinawan karate. The performers are dressed in very colorful costumes unique to Okinawa. This is reflective of the historically rich influences from Japanese, Chinese, and South East Asian neighbors as Okinawa was a centrally important area for trade for many centuries.

The audience will also be treated to special performances including the Legend of the Dragon God, Miyagi-Ryu Okinawan classical dance, Sanshin (traditional Okinawan instrument) and the Lion dance.

This first of its kind performance in Texas will include dancers from around the world, including Okinawa, coming together to deliver an engaging and memorable evening that touches the audience’s heart.

This is a ticketed event for the covered seating area. Free tickets are available (4 per person over age 16 while they last) at the Miller Outdoor Theatre box office the day of the performance between the hours of 10:30am-1pm. If tickets remain at 1pm, the box office will re-open one hour before show time to distribute the remaining tickets. As always, open seating on the hill.
